Plot continues:
This is the background behind the WB series "Roswell". Max Evans, Isabel Evans and Michael Guerin are teenage humans with extraordinary gifts - gifts that are "not-of-this-earth". They are human/alien hybrids, sent here to complete their destiny. Their counterparts have already perished in a war of attrition, thus one day, they will return to their home planet and save their race. Before a fateful day in 1999, the teens hid their gifts. The event that forever changed their lives was when Max healed Liz Parker (a classmate) after she was fatally shot in the stomach in a dispute between two customers at the restaurant where she waitresses. A close relationship then develops between Max and Liz. Central to the first season were the relationships between...
Roswell, developed, produced and co-written by Jason Katims, first aired on The WB channel October 6, 1999. The third and last season first aired on the UPN channel. The final episode aired on May 14, 2002. The show is based on the Roswell High young adult book series, written by Melinda Metz and edited by Laura J. Burns, who both became staff writers for the television series.
When the show premiered it generally got favorable reviews and quickly gained an outspoken fanbase. The show was in trouble in it's first season with the ratings. In season one it were mostly relationship-driven stand-alone episodes. Season 2 went into a slightly different direction, still relationship issues but now also more SCI-FI elements were introduced and also multi-episode story-acrs instead of more standalone episodes. Ronald D. Moore, who previously worked on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, came in to help develop the SCI-FI elements.
Not that all fans wanted this change. At the end of the second season The CW wasn't impressed with the ratings and decided to cancel Roswell after it's second season on May 15, 2001. 20th Centrury Fox was able to persuade UPN to pick it up for a third season as a package deal when UPN had outbid The CW on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Roswell aired directly after Buffy in the 2001-2002 season but Roswell could not held on to the Buffy viewers. UPN therefore cancelled Roswell after it's third season. I really like Roswell, watched approximately 5 times now. Young adults not always peak my interest but these young people did a fine job, I wasn't annoyed with any of them, which, with lots of other young adult shows, is hard not to be annoyed! It really was a great cast, would have liked that the reboot would have involved these actors but unfortunately that did not happen. I haven't watched the reboot yet and I have to say that I am not interested in watching the reboot so I cannot and will not give any judgement about the new show. Last rewatch was in 2018 so I think I will wait a few more years before I take out these DVD's again.
Plot (IMDB): Living among the citizens of the infamous New Mexico city of Roswell are some who are not there by choice. They are there to follow a destiny given to them by the members of their dying race, a race that they are someday destined to save.
