New Amsterdam is about an immortal detective who is born in 1607. He lived most of his life in New-York City. His name is John Amsterdam (real name Johann van der Zee), a Dutch man. The first episode aired on March 4th 2008 and the last episode on April 14th 2008. Of course is aired on FOX, the network which is famous for cancelling Fantasy / Sci-fi shows. Lead character has become a famous actor, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who most of you know from Game of Thrones and perhaps also the Tom Cruise movie Oblivion. His partner in the show is also a well-known actress, Zuleikha Robinson who plays Eva Marquez. Sci-fi fans know her from: The Lone Gunmen, The X-Files, Lost, Intelligence. New Amsterdam was created by Allan Loeb and Christian Taylor, who also served as executive producers alongside David Manson, Leslie Holleran, Steven Pearl and Lasse Hallström. The latter also directed the pilot.
Unfortunately it only lasted one short season of 8 episodes, the series was greenlit and given a thirteen-episode order on May 11, 2007. It was scheduled for a Fall premiere in 2007 on Fox but in part due to the writers strike in 2007, Fox held it back as a mid-season replacement and began airing in March 2008. In October 2007 it became clear that, because of the writers strike, the production was stopped. At that point 7 episodes were done. Fox would review the show but ultimately it got cancelled on May 11, 2008. Here you can find the viewing numbers.
Is it original, perhaps not, but I really liked it, if you want to compare it to other shows, Highlander comes to mind, Forever and the 2007 movie The Man From Earth (written in 1998). In 2023 New Amsterdam also has its 15th anniversary and I also plan to rewatch the show this year so most likely it will be a Rewatch + 15th Anniversary blog.
