Plot (IMDb): With the help of Albert Einstein and other trusted advisors, President Harry S. Truman commissioned a top-secret residential development in a remote area of the Pacific Northwest, one that would serve to protect and nurture America's most valuable intellectual resources. There our nation's greatest thinkers, the über-geniuses working on the next era of scientific achievement, would be able to live and work in a supportive environment. The best architects and planners were commissioned to design a welcoming place for these superlative geniuses to reside, an area that would offer the best education for their children, the best healthcare, the best amenities and quality of life. A community was created to rival the most idyllic of America's small towns - with one major difference: this town would never appear on any maps. At least, none that haven't been classified "eyes only" by the Pentagon.
Eureka premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel July 18th, 2006 and the last episode aired July 16, 2012. On August 8, 2011 the channel, now called Syfy Channel, announced Eureka would be cancelled after 5 seasons. The series premiere was watched by 4.1 million people, making it the top-rated cable program for that night; it was the highest-rated series launch in Sci-Fi's 14 year history. Season 2 had 2.5 million viewers, making it the top-rated cable program of the day.
Yes Eureka was a big hit, it ran for 5 seasons which nowadays does not happen often with a SCI-FI show on the Syfy channel. I always enjoyed Eureka, it was a fun, quirky show, really great cast. The storytelling for me was not always as entertaining, perhaps because I wanted a different kind of SCI-FI on TV but of course at that time you still had Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica. So there already were space oriented TV shows on Syfy.
It was just a fun piece of television with a lot of humor, it wasn't often very seriously, but when so, also with a dosis of humor. In the last 6-7 years I rewatched Eureka twice on Blu-ray, last time in 2019 and although I have a certain fondness for it, I told myself that I wasn't sure if I ever needed to rewatch it again. It feels like I am done with it now, which I don't feel with the other show in the same universe, Warehouse 13.
On August 2010 Eureka got renewed for a 5th season. A year later it was suggested by fansites and the show writers that Eureka had been renewed for a short 6 epsiode 6th season. A few days later it was announced that there wouldn't be a 6th season but one additional episode was approved for the 5th season in order to give the show a proper ending. Season 5 would be it's final season.
As I touched upon earlier, Warehouse 13 was set in the same universe as Eureka and this resulted in a few cross-over episodes. Mainly characters Fargo (Eureka) and Claudia Donovan (Warehouse 13) crossed over.
Recently Eureka has been released on Blu-ray in the US. In Germany the complete series has been released in February 2014. The German set looks to be the best PQ wise.
