To be totally honest, starting this year I had no intention of creating an anniversary blog for this, in my opinion back then, bad and failed TV show! I purchased the first season on DVD back in 2007, looking forward to something SCI-FI I hadn’t seen before, a blind buy. Well, I was so disappointed with the first seven episodes, I stopped watching it and I sold my copy, or perhaps even gave it away, I don’t know anymore.
It was a low budget TV show, some bad acting, not so good CGI. If it were only these 3 things, perhaps I still could have finished it. But most of the characters I found to be unlikeable, not engaging and the stories, well these weren’t that good either. So, it was impossible for me to continue watching after episode 7, back in 2007. Be aware that at this point I hadn't seen anything of season two. Because of project ReDuX in 2018, I did decide to purchase it again, watch it and write anniversary blogs for it.
The first episode aired on November 1st, 2000 and after the first season ended in March 2001, it was not cancelled but it was decided to retool the show, for reasons unknown, Michael Paré and Murray Melvin were not asked to return for a revised second season.
In August 2003 the second season arrived in syndication with a different name: Starhunter 2300. It is set 15 years after season one and Michael Paré’s character Dante Montana is replaced by Travis Montana (Clive Robertson), the son of Dante. Tanya Allen’s character Percy does return for season two, the reason she hasn’t aged was because had been lost in hyperspace all that time. Claudette Roche’s character Lucretia Scott also didn’t return for season two. Dawn Stern, who plays Callie and Paul Fox, who plays Marcus are added to the cast as also Graham Harley who replaces Murray Melvin as Caravaggio, it AI of the ship. Stephen Marcus who plays Rudolpho, was more or less a recurring character in the first season, the became one of the lead characters in season two.
Starhunter ReDuX
Season two also ran for 22 episodes and after that Starhunter (2300) was cancelled. Back in the day I read reviews that season two was better than its first season but till this year I could not verify this. In 2018 it was decided to do an update of the TV show called: Starhunter ReDuX. This next part I copied from Wikipedia:
On Tuesday 29 May 2018, Starhunter: ReduX, an updated and expanded version of seasons one and two featuring updated special effects, newly shot footage and a 4K transfer in a 16:9 aspect ratio (the original was filmed in 16x9 anamorphic, but only released as 4:3), premiered on El Rey Network across the USA. Among changes in Starhunter REDUX are some actor updates. Except for a brief moment in Episode 201, actor Graham Harley has been replaced by the original Caravaggio actor Murray Melvin. Michael Pare appears in parts of the second season (he didn't in the original Season 2) and the character Penny Montana is played by original actress from season one, Heidi von Paleske. An extended scene was added with an older Tanya Allen as Percy Montana. These changes, involving CGI, green-screen and other processes were made as a part of bringing Starhunter: ReduX closer to the creators' original vision for Season two.
The process seems to continue. "Starfield CreatorCo" (a new brand of Starfield Indie) has re-launched a further updated version of Starhunter REDUX on Amazon Prime in July 25, 2021 in the US and UK, with Canada, India and Australia following in short order. This streaming release is followed by a physical Media (Blu-ray and DVD) release worldwide about 3 months later. This further refreshed version is continuing in a reveal of further backstory integrated in prior Starhunter REDUX episodes.
My experience with Starhunter ReDuX:
Well, I was always aware of the Blu-ray release of Starhunter ReDuX, for some reason I kept an interest in this, don’t know why exactly, perhaps I still curious for season two. Anyway, I always decided to ignore it, but about 6-8 months ago, on Amazon.com, the price suddenly dropped to $36, from $55-$65 approximately. I checked reviews and most of them were glowing about the ReDuX project, I also read one or two reviews who were, like me, disappointed back in the day, and know saying it became a whole new TV show. Of course, I knew this couldn’t be the case but I was looking for reasons to purchase it, and so I did. I recently watched both seasons, I’ve written rewatch blogs about it. The first season is a really tough watch, the ReDuX update does make a bit better but it is still a disappointing season, although it does get a bit better after episode 7 and the final 3 episodes even are enjoyable. Season two definitely is a step up from the first season, more likeable characters, better stories and better picture quality.
Final Word:
Like I wrote in my rewatch blogs, I cannot recommend this show to everybody because for many of you this most likely will be unwatchable. If you’ve read the two blogs and still are interested, than yes, by all means. But it is nothing more than a low budget SCI-FI show, with some dodgy acting here and there, mostly in season one. If you watch the ReDuX verion on Blu-ray or streaming, than at least, the CGI is an improvement as well as the picture quality. But please don’t expect the same quality as for instance the reimagined Battlestar Galactica, because then you will be sorely disappointed. Happy 25th Anniversary Starhunter.
