Intro:

For some reason, the first season of Peacemaker was lost on me! Only when I saw the trailer for season two for the first time, I knew about its existence! It was released on HBO back in January 2022! For someone who is running a SCI-FI website, this is strange to say the least! So, the last three years I didn’t know about this and therefore it wasn’t on my website, anywhere! But the trailer for season two piqued my interest, the show mixes superhero stuff with lots of humor, bizarre situations, camaraderie, graphic violence, alien life, thrilling action pared with a lot of blood spatters. In that regard, you can compare it with “The Boys” but personally I favor Peacemaker because it is a bit more focused on the humor, at least in its first season.

Another confession I do need to make: I never seen the movie Peacemaker was a sequel of! The Suicide Squad! Last few years I barely watched any movies, only during the summer and during the X-mas holidays I watch more movies but other than that, mostly TV shows. Despite that I didn’t saw the movie, it was quite easy to get into Peacemaker and I can only say, it surprised the hell out of me, I really liked the first season and immediately afterwards purchased it on Blu-ray. Yes, even if you are not really into the DC Universe, you still can enjoy a certain TV shows within that Universe.

My limited knowledge of DCU, comics, movies and TV shows:

I have never been into comics or games. Superhero stuff I like on occasion, watched some of it but not all of it. Watched the original Superman movies, but only one or two of the new ones. Also watched the Spiderman movies, liked them, not loved them. Never been that interested in Batman, I’ve watched some of it, liked some of it, but I never got ecstatic about it. In the 90’s I did watch Lois & Clark, I watched all seasons of Smallville, but Arrow and Flash I only watched the first few seasons, got bored with it at some point. Legends of Tomorrow, watched the first 3 seasons but stopped watching it, never watched Supergirl, Stargirl, Krypton, same for Superman and Lois, although regarding the last one I did hear some good things about it. It was all a bit generic, lost interest in all these shows quite quick. The fact that Peacemaker is very different from these shows I mentioned above, makes it much more interesting. Perhaps because it has to do with network shows, in particular The CW, the kind of storytelling. So, with this segment I want to explain that my knowledge about DC superhero stuff in general almost non-existent and therefore I will most likely will miss connections with others shows or movies. So, please take this into account.

General:

The series, created by James Gunn, is set after the events of the Suicide Squad, Chris Smith (John Cena), aka the Peacemaker, returns home but is forced to work with A.R.G.U.S. (a fictional government organization appearing in DC Comics) agents on classified project only known as “Project Butterfly”. Besides that he also has to deal with some personal issues, including feeling haunted by memories of people he has killed in the name of peace. He also is trying to reconnect with his father Auggie (Robert Patrick), a pure racist who really also hates his son Chris because he blames Chris for the death of his other son.

The team he has to work with: the leader Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji), he has quite a surprise in store later on in the series. Newcomer Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), at first she is there to spy on Chris and the team, put there by her mother, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis in the movie). Agent Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), a tough one, doesn’t do niceties, doesn’t want to much contact with her colleagues and has no interest in Chris. In the movie she had a relationship with Rick Flag Jr., who was killed by Chris. John Economos (Steve Agee), he is more of the IT guy of the team, Chris makes fun of him because he dye’s his beard. He definitely is a favorite character of mine. Adrian Chase (Freddie Stroma) a vigilante, he hangs around the team because he figures himself to be Chris’ best friend. Finally Chris’ eagle, named Eagly, he is a very special eagle, he can be very deadly, no only to small prey but also to humans.

These characters who are forced to work together, they don’t even like each other, but as the first season progresses they begin to respect each other, and even some friendships form during their dangerous missions. Their mission is to identify and eliminate alien parasitic butterfly-like creatures who have taken over human bodies all over the world. For a long time Chris does not even know what project Butterfly means, only when it becomes inevitable, Chris and others learn what it means, Harcourt is the only one who knew about it and also knows of Murn’s secret.

Final Word:

So, if you want to watch something new, something fresh, fun characters, bizarre storylines and yes, some graphic violence, then you have to check this out. It really surprised the hell out of me. I watched it with my wife whom I didn’t tell what kind of a show it was because I feared she would not even want to start watching it, but she too loved the first season. I can only recommend it and sincerely hope that season two is at least as good as the first season! Recommended? Hell yes!
