Killjoys premiered on June 19th, 2015. It ran for five seasons containing 10 episodes each! It is a Canadian SCI-FI show, created by Michelle Lovretta, it is about a trio of hard-living bounty hunters—Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen), Johnny (Aaron Ashmore), and D'avin (Luke Macfarlane).
The show ended in 2019. Killjoys first released in 2015 with two other SCI-FI shows: The Expanse and Dark Matter. They all aired on the Syfy channel but only Killjoys was ‘their’ show. In 2017 its sister show Dark Matter got cancelled and one year later the other one also. Luckily The Expanse was saved by Amazon, Dark Matter unfortunately wasn’t. I spoke about this many times: why didn’t they save both Killjoys and Dark Matter for one more season, instead cancelling Dark Matter after 3 seasons and renew Killjoys for two seasons!? Well, the answer lies in the fact that because Killjoys was, sort of, their property, Killjoys was more valuable to the Syfy channel, more revenues.
I really liked Killjoys myself, it is an action-packed SCI-FI show, heavily story-arced which is something I really love. My favorite character was Johnny for sure, with his humor, his character, his love and commitment to Dutch. He definitely was the sincerest human out of these three. Besides these 3 characters Killjoys had a very rich and capable recurring characters, first one to come to mind is of course Khlyen, played by Rob Steward, Lucy, the ship (Tamsen McDonough), Zeph (Kelly McCormack), Delle Seyah Kendry (Mayko Nguyen), Fancy Lee (Sean Beak), Alvis Akari (Morgan Kelly), Pawter Simms (Sarah Power), Turin (Patrick Garrow), Pippin Foster (Atticus Mitchell) and Pree (Thom Allison). But the list goes on for a while.
Premise (Wiki):
Killjoys follows a trio of hard-living bounty hunters – Dutch, John, and D'avin. Working for the Reclamation Apprehension Coalition (RAC), they work in a four planet-and-moon system known as the Quad. Taking on warrants to apprehend people or property, RAC Agents are given high authority by their agency. As part of their job, they swear to remain neutral in conflicts and owe no allegiance to any system, government, or other organizations. With their pasts coming back to haunt them, the trio will have to work hard to keep themselves, and their friends, alive.
Killjoys is a book on TV, like Babylon 5. Not as good obviously but certainly entertaining enough. It has a beginning, a middle and a decent ending, which makes it very rewarding to rewatch every so many years.
Physical Media:
Killjoys has been released on DVD and Blu-ray, individually as also as a complete series. Only completely released on Blu-ray in US, UK and Germany. Only in the UK and in Germany it has also been released as a complete series. I have the UK set myself and it is a simple but good release for a decent price, and it has English subtitles.
Final Word:
Definitely a show to own on physical media, as I said, it is a complete story, ideal to rewatch every few years. So much happens each episode, there rarely is a weak episode among the total of 50 episodes. Anyway, I highly recommend it, yes, even though it is my least favorite of the 3 shows I mentioned earlier, it is a great ride! Happy 10th Anniversary Killjoys!
