“It doesn’t get any better than this!”
I’ve just watched a season two Dollhouse episode, episode four, “Belonging”, and I have to admit, it has been a long time since a single episode made such an impact on me! I am not sure if this episode will be topped this season but the strange thing was, that when it started watching it, I thought that this was not an episode I would be overly enjoying!
It all starts to become really interesting when we return to the present day after a flashback, and the guy, Nolan Kinnard, who is obsessed with Priya / Sierra and who also is a Rossum Doctor with much influence, repeat requests Sierra.
At the Dollhouse, Sierra paints a darkness, which seems to suggest something, Echo brings this to Topher and at first he thinks nothing of it but because of a reproachful remark of Echo, he begins to question it and finds out that Dr. Nolan Kinnard kidnapped her when she still was Priya, pumped her full with drugs, forcing her into insanity. Kinnard was in love with her but when she didn’t return his feelings, he sets his plan in motion. He (Kinnard) knows what happens next, Topher comes to the institution, which we see in a flashback, and takes Priya to the Dollhouse to become an active, who he then repeatedly books engagements with. This was also very uncomfortable to watch.
When Topher figures out what he had done, Adelle DeWitt closes his account but then Kinnard uses his influence and Harding (Keith Carradine), her boss, countermands her action and tells her Sierra is become Kinnard’s property. He also threatens Adelle that her early retirement would not be a pleasant one.
Meanwhile, Boyd confronts Echo with a book she is reading, she first tries to mislead him but he knows better and she admits she has a memory and she tells him, she needs to wake-up everyone because of a storm that is coming.
As a viewer this is very disturbing, but also for the characters Adelle DeWitt and Topher, who have to execute the order. For the first time Topher gets a conscience, really has a problem with what he has to do. But not only Topher is struggling with this, Adelle DeWitt is also struggling, not being able to protect her actives, simply being overruled by Harding, to simply give away Priya to that sick bastard like Kinnard. Against orders, Topher decides to imprint her with her original personality. So, Nolan thinks he gets the same imprint as before and is caught off guard when Pryia again tells him she finds him repulsive. A fight starts and ends with Pryia killing him. She calls Topher who comes to pick her up. He is shocked when he sees the dead body, finds Priya when Boyd enters the house, he also heard the call as he is head of security.
Boyd knows there is only one thing to do, the body must disappear, Topher is tasked with cutting up the body while Boyd arranges his disappearance. Actor Fran Kranz also plays this scene so perfectly, being numb, perplexed, doing what needs to be done. Boyd tells DeWitt what “happened”, the cover story that is, she knows better, but does not ask further because she is all too happy about the outcome.
The most intense scene is at the end, when Priya is back at the Dollhouse, in Topher’s office, where they discuss what happened, Priya wants nothing more than to forget this day, and she will, because will soon become an active again. Topher tells her he can keep the secret of what happened but he is not sure he can live with it. When she looks out of his window, she sees Victor and instantly knows he loves her and Topher tells her he knows that she loves Victor too. In the final moments we see Echo in her sleeping pod, opening the book and finding a security pass in preparation for when "the storm" comes, presumably put it there by Boyd.
Topher / Sierra (Priya):
Before this episode Topher was a bit of a douchebag, he thought of himself as a genius, he is obnoxious to Ballard, to Boyd…to everyone basically. Although that was kinda funny, it did not make his character really special…till now, with this episode, he starts to get a conscience, which made him way more interesting as a character and I must say, Fran Kranz was perfect in this episode. Dichen Lachman also shows off her acting capabilities in this episode. At first when she first meets Topher in the institution, in the final scene when she has this talk with Topher and all the scenes in between to be honest. These two actors make the episode perfect. These two characters make this episode perfect, the uncomfortableness, the drama, the awkwardness and mainly the trauma which these characters have to endure, mainly for Priya of course, makes this a perfect 10.
Final Word:
I felt the need to write a separate blog for this episode, I loved it, even though I was disturbed by it on many levels. Yes, it is TV but I am sure that there are powerful men like Harding out there and I am even more sure that there are dickheads like Nolan out there, so, yes, I know it is tv but I also know that these evil people, mostly men, are out there in the real world too! Anyway, as I said, it doesn't get any better than this!
